Air Space around Sanson

sansoncommunity

The Manawatu is one of the busiest and most complex pieces of airspace in New Zealand as it is home to the following aerodromes:

» Ohakea, which has intensive military operations;

» Palmerston North, which has significant scheduled air transport

operations, as well as Massey University School of Aviation, and

Fieldair Engineering;

» Feilding, an active GA aerodrome with more than 100 locally

based general aviation aircraft;

» Whanganui, with scheduled air transport, a major agricultural

operator, helicopter flight training, and an aero club;

» Foxpine, an aerodrome for general aviation.

Drones, kites, etc can be flown, however, there are rules you must follow prior to getting either of them off the ground. These are:

  • Drones and small kites flown under to height of local trees or the highest building is permitted, as when they become uncontrollable they will generally crash / come to ground below this line of sight.

  • Drone can be flown above this height line, so long as permission is sort which can be done via online at www.airshare.co.nz or by downloading the App: AirShare 2.0.

  • Large Kites maybe flown but it is requested that permission be sourced via Base Ohakea prior to flying these, as the kite string will inevitably be longer than 45m (148ft). If sourcing permission you can call 063569109 during working hours and ask for the Base Operations Tactical team.
